5 Metal Pioneers Who Became Lovable Pop-Culture Icons
Share
Hey everyone, PJ Pat here. Here is a video full of Ozzy Osbourne's most shocking quotes and untold stories, the man who was once branded the most dangerous figure in music and somehow became one of the most beloved characters on the planet.
Ozzy's journey from feared to adored is not unique. Plenty of metal pioneers softened into pop-culture sweethearts. Here are 5 who crossed all the way over. Let's do this!
1. Alice Cooper
In the 1970s Alice Cooper terrified parents with guillotines, fake blood, and snakes on stage, the original shock rocker. Today he is one of the most respected gentlemen in rock, a devoted golfer, a radio host, and a guy known for his warmth and faith. He kept the theatrical monster as a character he plays at night and revealed himself off stage as a total sweetheart. The scariest man in rock turned out to be one of the nicest.
2. Gene Simmons
The fire breathing, blood spitting Demon of Kiss became, of all things, a beloved reality TV dad and a business mogul. Shows like Gene Simmons Family Jewels revealed the larger than life monster as a doting, slightly goofy family man, and his relentless marketing turned the Kiss brand into an empire. He proved a metal villain could become a mainstream household personality without ever taking off the boots.
3. Dee Snider
Twisted Sister's Dee Snider looked like every worried parent's nightmare in the 80s, all makeup and wild hair. Then, when politicians tried to censor music, he showed up to a Senate hearing sharp, articulate, and devastatingly reasonable, winning over a room that expected a caveman. Over the years he became a respected actor, broadcaster, and elder statesman of rock. The guy they feared turned out to be one of the smartest voices in the room.
4. Rob Zombie
Rob Zombie built a career on horror imagery and grinding industrial metal, the stuff of midnight nightmares. Then he became a genuinely successful film director, beloved by a whole community of horror movie fans who may have never heard his music. He turned his dark obsessions into a second respected career and a recognizable brand far beyond metal. A monster who became a celebrated storyteller.
5. Bruce Dickinson
The Iron Maiden frontman might be the most impressive crossover of all. Off stage, Bruce Dickinson is a qualified commercial airline pilot who has flown his own band on tour, a world class fencer, an author, a broadcaster, and an entrepreneur. He took the wild energy of a metal singer and channeled it into a genuinely astonishing list of accomplishments. The screaming air raid siren of metal turned out to be a literal Renaissance man.
